This week has been a real challenge for me. First of all, I was struggling with "delicious" because it was not easy to create my page, I tried several passwords, and finally I could access. Then, to understand how it works took me some time, but finally I could do it.
Then, I read the arcticles suggested in this Unit. In particular, I liked the article" Teaching pronunciation to adult english language teachers because learning and teaching pronunciation in Chile is one of the most difficult skills to develop. Indeed, one of the most difficult skills to improve in my own case has been pronunciation, since when I was studying at the University we didn´t have the chance to meet many foreigners to practice our Oral skills. Basically we tried to acquire phonetics through drilling exercises and listening to cassettes, just imagine!! how hard it was. And the article mentions something that is exactly what happens in Chile, the difference between Sh and Ch is very difficult to acquire.
And in many of the courses we are teaching nowadays, we tell our students what Harmer, 1991, mentioned, that they can acquire good pronunciation but not necessarily perfect accent.
Keeping in mind the ideas from that book, cultivating positive attitudes in the classroom is the key to succeed in our teaching, because motivation is highly relevant to encourage our students to learn a foreing language.
The techniques suggested in the second article about video activities were also helpful. Using videos is worth the effort, because it become more meaningful specially for kids and teenagers.(Rucynski, 2011)
In lesson plans you could also find resourful material to include in your classes, drama activities, gameboards, etc. In fact, I saved the link and I uploaded them to Delicious, to try to include them in my future lessons.
Now, I am getting ready for the Project activity.
Cheers,
Laura from Chile
Hi Laura,
ReplyDeleteHow have you been doing? We've done a lot of work this week and we now have our own "Delicious" page. It was a new thing to me, just like you. It's good that from now on we can share good links, interesting websites to each other online!
About the aural/aural skill development, it is also a skill that Thai students find it a problem. Without good pronunciation, they are not confident to speak in English and this makes the situation worse. Without practices, no improvement! In my class, I have tried to bring some activities to get them familiar with English sounds and intonation. The Internet has provided us many educational websites to be used for our class. We've shared many on the discussion board and on Delicious. It's our job again to visit the websites and try them out to get the better for our class. Though it requires time, but it is worth it. Right?
Cheers,
Ta, Thailand
You are right Ta,
DeleteIt is worth the effort to use Delicious in order to improve our students´ performance.
Cheers,
Laura
Hi Laura..Jeremy Harmer's quotation - the one you have highlighted - is the one that has kept in my mind , but also the fact that working on our students' pronunciation is definitely a must. It might be a bit difficult for us teachers whose mother tongue is different from English. But this week has given the chance to explore websites that can help us. Let's give them a try!

Dear Laura,
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to read how difficult it was for you to get started with Delicious but I am convinced you will enjoy this link-saving tool a lot in the future.
I have visited your Delicious page to see which links you have added. I have become interested in “Blensdspace” but now I have no time to explore it. I just saved a link for further examination. Could you, please, tell me what made you save this link? Have you used this site yet? If so, how? What are its advantages/disadvantages?
Thanks for your reply in advance.
Linda
Hi Linda,
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my delicious page.
Indeed, I have´nt explored much "Blendspace", and I saved it in my Delicious page, because one of our classmates in this course mentioned the link and spoke about the advantages of this website to plan classes(I guess it was Iman). I pretend to explore more later.
Regards,
Laura
Hi Laura,
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to hear that setting up Delicious was a bit of a challenge for you, strange as though that may seem. I'm convinced that most learning about technology happens as we struggle with a difficult piece of software, apprehending its ins and outs. What you take away from your Delicious experience will almost certainly be applicable to other technological challenges you come across in the future.
Best,
Russell
